Birds are revered as bringers of messages and symbols of change and often symbolized light-hearted freedom. Their feathers have many spiritual, ceremonial and ritual uses. Native American tribes decorated feathers and attached to sacred pipes and sticks so their prayers could take wind and be received by the elders and Great Spirit. In many ancient cultures feathers are inextricably tied to the belief that birds, as spirit guides, walk through different stages of life with a person, teaching and guiding them, and protecting them. 𓆃
The cardinal has a loud and clear whistle. Whistles are often reminders to listen closely--to pay attention to what is blowing on the winds. In the case of the cardinal, the female joins in on the whistling, which is unusual among birds. This reflects that we should be listening to the inner voice (the feminine) more closely for our own health and well-being. Since most female birds usually are quiet and camouflaged, a cardinal totem encourages you to assert the feminine aspects of your creativity and intuition.
